Powerboat Training Where Yorkshire's Waterways Meet Tidal Rivers

Goole: The Obvious Choice for a Powerboat Training Centre

Few locations in the UK can offer calm inland waterways, tidal rivers and a busy commercial port all within a single training area.

This unique combination allows students to build confidence in sheltered conditions before progressing to more challenging environments as their skills develop. From close-quarters manoeuvring and navigation to passage planning and commercial traffic awareness, students can gain experience across a wide range of real-world boating situations.

Whether you're travelling from Leeds, York, Doncaster, Hull, Wakefield, Sheffield, Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Selby, or further afield, Goole is easily accessible and uniquely positioned to provide one of the most varied powerboat training environments in Yorkshire.

For newcomers to boating, it is an ideal place to build confidence. For experienced boaters, it offers opportunities to develop skills in a variety of operating environments, all within a connected waterway network.

Goole is far more than simply a convenient training location. As a town built around its waterways, it has a rich maritime heritage and a long-standing connection to life on the water.

Humber Helm Training is part of that continuing story, providing high-quality boating education that helps new generations gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to enjoy and work safely on Yorkshire's inland and tidal waterways.

A Town Built on the Water

Humber Helm's comfortable, modern and fully equipped classroom is located within Viking Marina, overlooking the water and pontoons.

Students learn in an authentic boating environment, moving seamlessly from classroom sessions to practical training afloat. Overlooking the marina and surrounded by daily boating activity, the classroom provides a professional setting for course briefings, navigation exercises and shore-based learning, while maintaining a constant connection to the water.

Marina life and training activities are carefully observed and overseen by Bosun, the marina's resident swan.

A Purpose-Built Learning Environment

Based at Viking Marina

Humber Helm operates from Viking Marina, one of the region's most established marinas and boatyards.

The marina is home to a thriving boating community and a range of marine services, including Viking Marine, a well-stocked chandlery supplying boating equipment, safety gear and maintenance essentials.

Located within a working marina, students learn in an authentic boating environment surrounded by the people, vessels and facilities that keep life on the water moving.

Proud to Be RYA Recognised

Humber Helm is an RYA Recognised Training Centre.

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is internationally recognised for its high standards of boating training and safety. As an RYA Recognised Training Centre, our instructors, vessels, facilities and operating procedures are regularly assessed to ensure they meet these standards.

For students, this provides confidence that training is professional, consistent and safety-focused. RYA qualifications are widely recognised in the UK and around the world for leisure boating, commercial progression and vessel chartering.

Committed to Responsible Boating

Enjoying the waterways comes with a responsibility to protect them.

Humber Helm is proud to hold WiSE (Wildlife Safe Scheme) accreditation. WiSE helps boating and wildlife tourism operators understand how to minimise disturbance to wildlife and operate responsibly within environmentally sensitive areas.

Through our courses and day-to-day operations, we encourage students to enjoy the water responsibly, respecting both the environment and the wildlife that depends upon it.
